It is relatively unknown, as it was released in 1978 which was 11 years after it was recorded and 6 years after Morgan had passed away. On the original double LP there were also songs from a 1969 session which are now on the Sonic Boom CD. The 1995 release of this CD just features the tracks from a 1967 recording session featuring Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Billy Higgins, Bobby Hutcherson, and Ron Carter. The playing on this album is spectacular and somewhat surprising. I don't own every Lee Morgan album but I have a good amount and heard nearly all of them. If you are new to Lee Morgan I would start with this recording of his.
It is surprising that Lee Morgan's The Procrastinator was not released when it was recorded in 1967 for the sextet (which includes Wayne Shorter, vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson, pianist Herbie Hancock, bassist Ron Carter and drummer Billy Higgins) lives up to their potential on a well-rounded set of originals by Morgan and Shorter. The music ranges from the funky "Party Time" (which sounds like it could have been written by Horace Silver) to more explorative pieces.
Tom Cat is an album by Lee Morgan recorded in 1964, though only issued in 1980. It was originally released as LT 1058. While lesser known in comparison to The Sidewinder and other albums, it features several of Morgan's contemporary Blue Note recording artists such as McCoy Tyner, Art Blakey, and Jackie McLean.
The Procrastinator is an album by jazz trumpeter Lee Morgan released posthumously on the Blue Note label, featuring performances by Morgan, Wayne Shorter, Bobby Hutcherson, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter and Billy Higgins. It was originally issued in 1978 as a double LP ( Jazz Classics Series, BN-LA582-J2) featuring tracks recorded in three different sessions: July 1967, September 1969 and October 1969. Alongside the US-issue there was a single album release in Japan the same year titled Lee Morgan All-Star Sextet, which only comprised the session of 1967 (ST-83023/GXF-3023).
