Conductor François-Xavier Roth took this adventurous band through Berlioz's Symphonie fantastique in a revelatory 2010 release on Actes Sud, and they have gone from strength to strength in recordings for that label and Harmonia Mundi. This 2018 album of Harold en Italie and Les Nuits d'Été marks their return to Berlioz, though the orchestra's expert playing and the exceptional audio reproduction show a real advance in the quality of the finished product. Harold en Italie was Berlioz's second symphony with an obbligato viola part, intended as a vehicle for Niccolò Paganini,.

Tabea Zimmermann (viola), Stéphane Degout (baritone), Les Siècles, François-Xavier Roth. Performance), (Recording). This new recording with Tabea Zimmermann has much to recommend it.

In Les Nuits d’été, Berlioz pioneered, well before Mahler and Ravel, a song cycle for voice and orchestra. In Harold in Italy, scored for large orchestra and solo viola, he experimented with the symphonic genre. These period-instrument performances by Les Siècles, led by François-Xavier Roth, with violist Tabea Zimmermann, also feature Stéphane Degout in the vocal cycle, heard here in the composer’s own version for baritone. Roth, Orchestra Les Siècles, Degout. Tabea Zimmermann throws herself into the viola part of the "Harold" Symphony with abandon; even more remarkable is the choice of baritone Stéphane Degoult for the miraculous "Nuits d'été". François-Xavier Roth and Les Siècles present the symphony in its second version, based on the Hamburg/Weimar performances of 1893-94. Hector Berlioz Harold en Italie with François-Xavier Roth and Les Siècles with Tabea Zimmermann, plus Stéphane Degout in Les Nuits d’été from Hamonia Mundi. This Harold en Italie, op. 16, H 68 (1834) captures the essence of Romantic yearning, expressed in Byron's Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage where the hero rejects convention to seek his destiny in uncharted territory. First, we sampled a CD by the period instrument orchestra, Les Siècles. On this new release they are conducted by their founder, François-Xavier Roth in performances of Harold en Italie with violist Tabea Zimmermann and the song cycle, Les Nuits d’été. The latter is unusual in that the songs are all sung by a baritone, for the first time on disc, we believe. The soloist is Stéphane Degout.
