But this collection of 30 songs issued by Mercury Records starts off in top gear and burns rubber until about halfway through, when it switches gears to the somewhat tamer and more stylized Louisiana portion of the disc. Artists range from Eddie Bond and His Stompers to Professor Longhair (working as Roy Byrd) and His Blues Jumpers, with J. P. ("Big Bopper") Richardson and Conway Twitty representing the most familiar stopping points.

Mercury Rev is an American indie rock band formed in 1989 in Buffalo, New York. Original personnel were David Baker (vocals), Jonathan Donahue (vocals, guitars), Sean Mackowiak, known as "Grasshopper" (guitars, clarinet), Suzanne Thorpe (flute), Dave Fridmann (bass) and Jimy Chambers (drums). With their early records, Mercury Rev offered experimental, psychedelic rock, which gradually shifted to a melodic, ornate sound.
