Scritti Politti finally delivered their fourth album, Anomie & Bonhomie, in the summer of 1999, nearly 15 years after their third. Such a long wait almost guarantees some change in the music, but the strange thing about Anomie & Bonhomie is how the updates - rapper cameos, vague house beats, grunge guitars - sound as if they're pasted over backing tracks from 1986. Not necessarily a bad thing, but disconcerting, since the heart of this album is squarely in Cupid & Psyche 85 territory
White Bread Black Beer, Scritti's 2006's LP, proved rehabilitative for Gartside in numerous ways. A sleek, gorgeous and deeply personal sounding record that comes dappled with the beautiful, magic frailty of a mid-60s Brian Wilson orbiting Earth from the Mir space station, it sounds like the solo album that's been trapped inside him during each of the scenery or personnel shifts of the two decades
Anomie & Bonhomie (1999). Singles from Provision. Oh Patti (Don't Feel Sorry for Loverboy)" Released: 1988. In an interview with David Gamson, he stated that "Provision took an incredibly long time to make. The initial drum tracks were all recorded with the Synclavier and at that point the Synclav's sequencer was extremely primitive. Lots of inputing kick and snare hits via SMPTE numbers rather than beats and bars. "British album certifications – Scritti Politti – Provision". British Phonographic Industry. Anomie & Bonhomie, the first new Scritti Politti album since 1988's Provision, is no exception. Though elements of the sound have changed, that summer vibe is still there, strong as ever. A happy surprise is how smoothly Green Gartside has integrated the sounds of nineties pop into Scritti Politti's music. Basically, three new ingredients have been added this time around: rap (courtesy of Mos' Def, Lee Majors, and Me'Shell Ndegeocello), rock guitar (ex-Revolution member Wendy Melvoin is among the guitarists), and the live feel that came back in favor with the emergence.
Scritti Politti‘s Green Gartside tells Time Out about his colourful journey from post-punk squat-dweller to ‘80s R. By John LewisPosted: Tue May 30 2006. As an adolescent, Green was obsessed with fol. At school, I used to go to a folk club in the Newport docks area. Martin Carthy was my hero. They had a way of holding their cocks while they were pissing. I found that fascinating. I wrote a lyric about it on the first album. He held it like a cigarette/ Behind a squaddie’s back/He held it so he hid its length/And so he hid its lack. He lived in a Camden Town squat.
Green Gartside still creates unabashedly fey, unapologetically smooth pop, sprinkled with hints of soul and dance. Subsequent spins let Green's talents float to the surface, particularly on the luxurious "First Goodbye," the dancefloor opener "Umm," and "Mystic Handyman. Read full description.
