Hello, I Must Be Going! is the second solo studio album by English drummer and singer-songwriter Phil Collins. It was released on 5 November 1982 on Virgin Records in the United Kingdom and on Atlantic Records in North America, and named after the Marx Brothers' song of the same name. After his band Genesis took a break in activity in late 1981, Collins started work on a follow-up to his first solo album Face Value (1981).
When they got back, Collins jumped right into recording his second solo album, 1982's Hello, I Must Be Going! The album wasn't a huge departure from the formula established on Face Value, built as it was on introspective, gut-spilling ballads, horn-driven R&B jams, arty rockers, and dramatic breakup songs. In fact, the first track, the vitriolic "I Don't Care Anymore," sounds like a very close relative of "In the Air Tonight," only less mysterious and more in your face.
An album of dizzying extremes, Phil Collins’ Hello, I Must be Going! is the sound of a man who hasn't finished wrestling with his failed marriage. He hadn't gotten a handle on his own solo ambitions either. If my first album was 'I'm divorced and I'm miserable,'" Collins told Rolling Stone in 2016, "my next one was 'I'm going to kick this f--er to bits. Hello, I Must Be Going! arrived in November 1982 with still more hard feelings for the Genesis frontman - even as he began to experiment with the polished groove-pop that would send the subsequent No Jacket Required to the stratosphere. The last thing I want to do is make a second divorce album, Collins wrote in his 2016 autobiography Not Dead Yet, "but being someone who writes from the heart and not the head, I have no option.
