Fantastic Plastic Machine has done it once again. This third album is a bit of a departure from his familiar hyper pop-retro style, it's like an evolution of it, with more jazz and blues incorporated, without losing its electronic edge. This ability of his to create a unique eclectic style all his own sets him apart from many imitators. But as serious as he is with producing good music, you can also tell he loves to have fun with it and never takes himself too seriously. Producer Tomoyuki Tanaka is the FPM, and his obsessions - bossa nova, French pop, baroque pop, and the sound of swinging-'60s London - are beholden to his mentors the Pizzicato Five. The result is a delightful, infectious album that's not only hooky as all get-out, but also rewards repeated listening. Along with Matador's Pizzicato Five compilations and Cornelius' brilliant Fantasma, Fantastic Plastic Machine ranks as one of the best albums to come out of the Japanese club-pop movement.
