Tru Thoughts is a British independent record label. It was formed in Brighton in 1999 by Robert Luis of Deeds Plus Thoughts and Paul Jonas. It became, in one decade, one of the most famous and well respected labels in the independent music world. Since the acclaimed first album release of Bonobo’s debut ‘Animal Magic’, the label has put out over two hundred LPs, across genres from electronic, funk, soul and hip hop to jazz, tropical, grime and more.
Luis and co-founder Paul Jonas were inspired to follow their dream and start the label by a phenomenal response to the wide-ranging musical policy of their renowned Brighton club nights, phonic:hoop and Shake Yer Wig.

This year sees the 15th Anniversary of Tru Thoughts Recordings, the pioneering and innovative label from Brighton which won the coveted Gilles Peterson Worldwide Award for Best Label way back in 2005 and has continued to go from strength to strength, amassing a truly international roster and fanbase as well as mainstream acclaim.
Tru Thoughts Recordings released its first ever 12″, the dancefloor-directed Alarming Frequency EP by Steady, on 1st September 1999, from an ‘office’ under Robert Luis’ stairs in Brighton. Quite simply a must-have for the ardent Tru Thoughts army of fans, and for those less familiar it is a catch-all introduction to one of the UK’s foremost independent record labels.
