You might not care for the Destination Rachmaninov concept attached to this release (and a later one, with the other two concertos): there are graphics showing Daniil Trifonov, perhaps the pianist of the moment at the time of the album's 2019 release, in an old train compartment, and even a video showing him in the Rocky Mountains, getting thrown off. a train after playing a piano on it. The concept does not really address the specific music involved.

With his new album, Daniil Trifonov begins the cycle of Serge Rachmaninov's virtuoso piano concertos, recorded with Yannick Nézet-Séguin at the head of the Philadelphia Orchestra (an orchestra closely associated with the composer and his music). Indeed, Rachmaninov himself had recorded his concertos with the Philadelphia Orchestra more than 80 years ago. "Departure", the first part of the journey entitled "Destination Rachmaninov", brings together concertos Nos. 2 and 4, alongside transcriptions for solo piano of the Partita in E major by JS Bach
Album · 2018 · 9 Songs. This is one of 2018’s most exciting piano concerto recordings. It combines an outstanding, electrifying pianist with an imaginative, commanding conductor, plus one of America’s greatest orchestras. Presented through the prism of Rachmaninov’s travels-fleeing Russia, journeying around the world as a performer, settling in the United States-this recording of the Second and Fourth Concertos is magnificent. The Second is noble, romantic, and wonderfully rich, while the more complex Fourth is superbly realized
Daniil Trifonov (piano), Philadelphia Orchestra, Yannick Nézet-Séguin. Grammy winner Daniil Trifonov presents a cycle of Sergei Rachmaninov’s highly virtuosic Piano Concertos. Recorded with Yannick Nézet-Séguin and the Philadelphia Orchestra, the orchestra most closely associated with the composer with which Rachmaninov himself famously recorded the set of concerti over 80 years ago. The two-part Journey with Rachmaninov begins with DESTINATION RACHMANINOV - DEPARTURE, including the great Piano Concerto No. 2, probably Rachmaninov’s best-loved work, paired with the equally beautiful and rarely performed 4th Concerto
