Afro-Cuban Latin Jazz is Jazz that uses Latin-American rhythms. The primary rhythm is the Clave, though the piano also plays a Montuno and Tumbao. Latin Jazz, as the name implies, is Jazz that uses rhythms derived from Latin American music. There are two main categories of Latin Jazz: Afro-Cuban Jazz – based on Cuban music with genres like mambo, cha-cha and salsa & popular in the late 1940’s and early 1950’s (sometimes referred to as Cubop). Afro-Brazilian Jazz – based on Brazilian music with genres like the Bossa Nova and samba & popular in the 1960’s. This lesson will discuss only the former.

Afro-Cuban jazz is the earliest form of Latin jazz. It mixes Afro-Cuban clave-based rhythms with jazz harmonies and techniques of improvisation. Afro-Cuban jazz emerged in the early 1940s with the Cuban musicians Mario Bauzá and Frank Grillo "Machito" in the band Machito and his Afro-Cubans in New York City.
Album cover design and jazz photography on the Blue Note Records. Notes and pictures from Birka Jazz Archive. BLUE NOTE started the 12" LP era in mid 1950s with some trad jazz albums, but then launched the legendary 1500 modern jazz series. RED MILES took over as the label´s art director and he defined a style that came to be assocoiated with New York hard bop. The first gem in the 1500 series is Miles Davis (1501) and the last is Bennie Green (1599) + the little "bastard" at the end - The 3 Sounds LP, which has number 1600.
