Moonlight Shadow is a song released in 1983, and remains Mike Oldfield’s most successful single. Maggie Reilly performed the vocals, but Oldfield wrote the lyrics and was the song’s guitarist. The song tells the story of a woman who loses her lover to a violent struggle in the middle of the night. People have since speculated that the song refers to the death of John Lennon, who was killed by gunman Mark David Chapman in 1980. The details in the song differ from that of the incident in which Lennon was killed, and Oldfield, in a 1995 interview says the song was inspired by the film Houdini.
Lyrics to "Moonlight Shadow" song by Mike Oldfield: The last that ever she saw him Carried away by a moonlight shadow He passed on worried and warning . .The trees that whisper in the evening Carried away by a moonlight shadow Sing a song of sorrow and grieving Carried away by a moonlight shadow All she saw was a silhouette of a gun Far away on the other side He was shot six times by a man on the run And she couldn't find how to push through. I stay, I pray See you in Heaven far away I stay, I pray See you in Heaven one day. Four .
