Olu Dara was born Charles Jones III January 12, 1941, in Natchez, Mississippi. In the 1970s and '80s he played alongside David Murray, Henry Threadgill, Hamiet Bluiett, Don Pullen, Charles Brackeen, James Blood Ulmer, and Cassandra Wilson. His first album, In the World: From Natchez to New York (1998), revealed another aspect of his musical personality: the leader and singer of a band immersed in African-American tradition, playing an eclectic mix of blues, jazz, and storytelling, with tinges of funk, African popular music, and reggae. His second album Neighborhoods, with guest appearances by Dr John and Cassandra Wilson, followed in a similar vein.

Natchez Shopping Blues. Album In the World: From Natchez to New York. Natchez Shopping Blues Lyrics. I been shoppin' I been shoppin' y'all, shoppin' I bought my mind and soul on the river I bought my heart in Nashville, Tennessee I bought my legs on the ocean up by Newport I bought my arms on the seven seas I bought my eyes in Brooklyn on Herkimer Street But the love I got in Natchez, lord it was free

tarist Olu Dara has been knocking around New York City's jazz circles for almost 20 years. On "In the World" he embraces Caribbean rhythms, African highlife/socca riffs, and gut-bucket blues. Vaguely reminiscent of Taj Mahal's fanciful integration of world music and the blues, Dara consistently straddles urban and rural artistry. Sophisticated yet irresistibly down-home, this collection is festive, tuneful, and engaging
