In 1964, Fania Records was founded in New York City by Jerry Masucci, an Italian-American lawyer with a love for Latin melodies, and Johnny Pacheco, a composer and bandleader born in the Dominican Republic. Masucci later bought out his partner Pacheco from Fania Entertainment Group Ltd. and was the sole owner until his death in December 1997.
Biography by John Bush.
Style: latin-american.
The cue for discovering this fact is actually listening to Nicky Marrero’s timbale tuning here. De Nuevo A La Carga is the percussion feature of the set, with Barretto, Nicky and Roberto Roena stretching out with short solos, followed by three choruses with Pacheco’s flute in charge, all propelled by Bobby Valentín’s furious bass lines.

The cast of characters changed over the years and was more in-line with improvised jams than practiced rehearsed pieces. Famous among these semi-impromptu sessions were the ones recorded live at New York's Cheetah Room in 1971 and the 2 volumes recorded at Yankee Stadium in 1976.
Organizing a concert in a ballpark that had just turned 50 years old was not easy. The baseball season was in full swing, and although the Yankees were not playing well that year, they still had a month of home games left on the calendar. In 1973, most of the Latin population of New York was Puerto Rican, and the Bronx was the center of that community in the city. The lineup for the concert was phenomenal.
