Jakob Ludwig Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy (3 February 1809 – 4 November 1847), born and widely known as Felix Mendelssohn, was a German composer, pianist, organist and conductor of the early Romantic period. Mendelssohn's compositions include symphonies, concertos, piano music and chamber music.

Johann Sebastian Bach's stature as a composer of such extraordinary genius and widespread influence is so firmly established in Western culture that it is difficult to imagine that only a little over a century-and-a-half ago, his music and reputation languished in obscurity, virtually unknown to all but a few specialists. In his preparations for performing other works of Bach, Mendelssohn occasionally copied out instrumental parts himself. Among the few such parts to have survived are Mendelssohn's manuscript parts for clarinet and bassoon for Bach's Cantata, BWV 106, "Gottes Zeit ist die allerbeste Zeit," which are held in the collections of the Library of Congress, and a representative image of which accompanies this essay.

Paul Mendelssohn Bartholdy (born Paul Felix Abraham Mendelssohn Bartholdy; 18 January 1841, Leipzig – 17 February 1880, Berlin) was a German chemist and a pioneer in the manufacture of aniline dye. He co-founded the Aktien-Gesellschaft für Anilin-Fabrikation (AGFA), a German chemical company. He is not to be confused with his uncle, the banker Paul y, who was the son of his grandfather Abraham Mendelssohn Bartholdy.

Bach: Mendelssohn 1841 Leipzig Matthäus-Passion. Bach: Matthäuspassion (Arr. by Felix Mendelssohn in 1841). Mendelssohn felt these changes were necessary to make the St. Matthew effective for his audience; certainly he didn't do the wholesale reorchestration that, for example, Mozart did with Handel's Messiah, but Mendelssohn's St. Matthew Passion feels-especially in this fine performance-very different from the Bach we hear from such modern-day Baroque instrument specialists as the Bach Collegium Japan.

Pianist, composer and conductor Felix Mendelssohn was born Jakob Ludwig Felix y in Hamburg, Germany, on February 3, 1809. His parents were Jewish, but converted to Christianity before he, his brother and two sisters were born. When Mendelssohn was 2 years old, he moved to Berlin with his parents and siblings. In 1819, Felix Mendelssohn joined the Singakademie music academy and began composing non-stop. In 1820 alone, he wrote a violin sonata, two piano sonatas, multiple songs, a cantata, a brief opera and a male quartet. In 1826, Mendelssohn produced one of his best known works, Overture to a Midsummer Night's Dream.

After his death, Johann Sebastian Bach quickly fell into obscurity and for a long time, his music was only known to a few composers and scholars. This changed suddenly on 11 March 1829 with Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy’s performance of Bach’s St. Matthew Passion at the Berlin Sing-Akademie. His complete performance of the Passion can justifiably be described as the starting point of a broadly-based Bach renaissance. At first, Mendelssohn did not present the full-length St. Matthew Passion, but reduced the work to approximated half its original extent
