Lee Clayton After quitting the Air Force he moved to Nashville in 1968 and began his career as a songwriter. In 1972 he wrote "Ladies Love Outlaws" for Waylon Jennings. In 1973 he released his first album simply titled Lee Clayton, with which, as Clayton would later say, he was very dissatisfied. In the following years he continued his songwriting. The songs' style was reminiscent of Bob Dylan and the single, "I Ride Alone", became very notable. In 1979, he went on a big world tour, which became a huge success.

Country-rock songwriter Lee Clayton arguably was responsible the term "outlaw country" in 1972 with his song "Ladies Love Outlaws," a hit for Waylon Jennings. If there had been many other songs, all in the distinctive style of Lee Clayton, maybe "I Ride Alone" would not have been so inspirational to me. Regardless, there is no other driving song, no other "get home from work completely finished and sit back on your favourite chair and forget the world" song, or generation defining song I'd rather have playing than this.
