MCA was born and raised in Brookyln, and although no one in his immediate family was musically inclined, he taught himself to play bass guitar and started playing in punk rock bands around the city during his teens. MCA formed the hip-hop trio The Beastie Boys with Michael "Mike D" Diamond and John Berry in 1981 after the guys had played in a punk band together. By 1983, Berry left the group and was replaced by Adam "Ad-Rock" Horovitz and began to incorporate rapping into their live performances. License to Ill became the first rap album to hit number one on the Billboard album charts and birthed the singles "(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (To Party!)" and "No Sleep Til Brooklyn. After License to Ill, the guys ruled the rap charts in the 1980s and dropped seven more albums to date including Paul's Boutique, Check Your Head and Hello Nasty.

The first MCA Records release in the US was former Uni artist Elton John's "Crocodile Rock" single in 1972, which appeared on a plain black and white label. Immediately following this the US MCA label used a black with curved rainbow design until the late 1970s. This design was directly inspired by the US Decca label of the 1960s. In December 1972, Neil Diamond, another Uni artist, reached superstar status with his first MCA release, the live multi-platinum Hot August Night. MCA released the highly successful soundtrack album to the 1973 film The Sting. The soundtrack music was arranged and conducted by Marvin Hamlisch and won an Academy Award for Best Original Score (MCA issued many other soundtracks to films from Universal, along with some non-Universal films).

On what would have been MCA of the Beastie Boys' birthday, we revisit this tribute mixtape put together by WhoSampled's Chris Read shortly after Adam Yauch's passing in 2012. The mix takes in Beastie Boys classics from various eras, remixes, acapellas and alternate versions and places them alongside original sample material largely (but not exclusively) from the Paul's Boutique album.
