Bertie Blackman’s first encounter with her artistic self came as a child sashaying across her mother and father’s paint strewn studio floor. The daughter of iconic Australian artist Charles Blackman, not many musicians can boast a foundation of emotional expression like Bertie. Bertie first stepped onto the scene with ‘Headway’ (2004), her folk-inspired debut album. The single ‘Favourite Jeans’ became Bertie’s radio breakthrough and saw her dubbed Australia’s underground queen.

Beatrice "Bertie" Blackman (born 1982) is an Independent Australian singer, songwriter and guitarist. She rose to fame with her debut album in 2004, entitled Headway which came after years of prolific performances around Sydney's Inner city venues, where she developed a dedicated following.
Bertie Blackman just can’t make up her damn mind. After trying her hand at both the earnest indie rocker and rootsy storyteller across two albums, Blackman has made the transition into her own custom hybrid of pop, rock and electronica. Exactly where this blunt, practically 180-degree turn has originated from is a mystery. Perhaps one of the best things about the album is that Blackman, either as a musician or as a songwriter, never sounds as if she is trying to do anything to please anyone else aside from herself. She doesn’t plan to have her sound pinned down to specifics anytime soon – and as a result of this, Secrets and Lies prospers immeasurably.
