To celebrate the launch of the publication Total State Machine at the Ritzy Cinema London, I was invited to reinterpret and deconstruct the music of British group Test Dept, a band I had seen frequently at the time and who had an enormous influence on my own thinking and creative output over the years. The crowd at Studio 9294 must be predisposed towards the message Test Dept are sending to be here, understand its importance, or they couldn’t endure this bombardment of the senses.

Their approach was marked by the use of "found" material, re-constructed to better serve their purpose, of making "more" with "less". The group formed in the London suburb of New Cross in 1981. The core members of the group were Graham Cunnington, Paul Jamrozy, Jonathan Toby Burdon, Paul Hines and Angus Farquhar.

Formed in 1981, they utilised the waste debris from the local scrapyards to create a sonic arsenal from recycled scrap metal. Their exploration of tonality was fused with experimental electronics and early sampling technology, film and slide montaged visuals, as well as combining traditional instruments, notably bagpipes from Alistair Adams.
