Chaos and Creation in the Backyard is the thirteenth solo studio album by Paul McCartney, released in the UK on 12 October 2005 and in the US on 13 October. McCartney plays almost all of the instruments, similar to his 1970 album McCartney and the 1980 McCartney II album

Released to widespread critical acclaim, and earning Paul three Grammy nominations, Chaos And Creation In The Backyard saw McCartney hand over production to the . M and Radiohead collaborator Nigel Godrich. When Paul and I got together we had a common goal, said Godrich. We wanted to make a great album that was true to Paul. I think that’s exactly what we did. We really made a lot of it up as we went along, added Paul. I’d try something and if it didn’t work I’d try something else until it did. It was like making a go-cart in the backyard

The cover for Chaos and Creation in the Backyard is from a photograph of McCartney strumming a guitar in his family’s backyard in Liverpool, taken by brother Mike McCartney (aka Mike McGear) and originally entitled Paul Under Washing, before being retitled Our Kid Through Mum’s Net Curtains. However, the album underperformed in the United Kingdom, peaking at the number-ten on chart and spending only 3 weeks inside the top 200 with cumulative sales of around 45,000 units. It fared better in France, selling in excess of 100,000 copies during a 21-week chart run. According to the annual report published by EMI, Chaos and Creation in the Backyard had sold . million copies worldwide by the end of March 2006.

Quiet though it may be, Paul McCartney experienced something of a late-career renaissance with the release of his 1997 album Flaming Pie. With that record, he shook off years of coyness and half-baked ideas and delivered an album that, for whatever its slight flaws, was both ambitious and cohesive, and it started a streak that continued through the driving rock & roll album Run Devil Run and its 2001 follow-up, Driving Rain. Consequently, Chaos sounds as polished as a normal McCartney album, as polished as Driving Rain, but the process of its creation and recording does make this a very different album from not just its predecessor, but from most of McCartney's solo albums.

I think Paul said it best when he sings, on the first song on his new album, there’s a fine line between chaos and creation Truer words have never been spoken. Chaos and Creation in the Backyard has some of the best music that Paul has recorded in years. It’s not all perfect but most the best tracks on Chaos rival anything on Flowers in the Dirt and Flaming Pie. What I love about Chaos and what I didn’t like about the over produced Driving Rain is that this new CD has Paul is being Paul; something that we haven’t heard from him in ages. Chaos never sounded this beautiful. So sit back, relax and let Paul McCartney delight you with the soothing sounds of his elegant musical backyard.
