Grand National is the fourth album by the John Butler Trio. Somewhere between 22 and 25 songs were considered for this album, some created during or before Sunrise Over Sea. To date, it is the John Butler Trio's most ambitious work, containing many more instruments than previously seen on their albums, including a whole strings and horn section on some songs, with numerous percussion instruments for many more.

John Charles Wiltshire-Butler (born 1 April 1975), professionally known as John Butler, is an American-born Australian singer, songwriter, and music producer. He is the front man for the John Butler Trio, a roots and jam band, that formed in Fremantle, Western Australia in 1998. John Butler is a talented musician. His ability to write catchy guitar licks is just about as good as any. The difference between this album and Sunrise Over Sea is the consistency. This album is consistent for the entire hour. Consistently brilliant. Now I don’t want to get fan-boyish (I believe this is the term the kids use these days) but this is my candidate for album of 2007, and I have a feeling it will still be come Christmas. You get the feeling that John Butler is in a good place on Grand National. The lyrics are contemplative but not negative, thoughtful but not overdone and poignant without being forceful. The lyrics are uncomplicated yet undeniably effective.
