Here is What Is, the remarkable sixth solo album from Daniel Lanois, strikes a chord for independence as the first major release on his own Red Floor Records. Here Is What Is is the fifth studio album by Canadian songwriter and record producer Daniel Lanois. It was first released in December 2007 as a high-quality download, and later released on CD on March 18, 2008. The album is the result of the same project that led to the 2007 documentary "Here Is What Is" that premiered at the 2007 Toronto International Film Festival in September. The movie documents the aesthetics and creative process behind Lanois' approach to music making and recording.

Daniel Lanois is one of the newest breed of rock musicians to make the jump to serious film composition. Indeed, he has actually proved more successful as a film music composer than he has in his own. The major impetus behind his career came from The Unforgettable Fire, which became a mega-hit album and gave him exposure to a much wider audience.
Daniel Lanois' third solo album Shine - the first since his decade-old For The Beauty Of Wynona - is difficult to swallow, and not because of any challenging experimentation, politics, or off-kilter production. None of that, nah. What got me nervous about this album is that, for his reputation, it's the most drab, adult-oriented product to make it to my stereo since some Starbucks-sipping visitor got sentimental about the Magnolia soundtrack. Those frogs were symbolic!" he cried, and asked me to bow with him before his shrine to Aimee Mann
The album Venetian Snares X Daniel Lanois indeed travels to new zones in what Lanois describes as a body of work driven by exploration. With Funk laying the groundwork with his drum sounds and Lanois riding the pedal steel, they weave their songs and sounds together in a new kind of sonic tapestry.
