The album features master flutist Vijay Raghav Rao, with accompaniments by tabla master Alla Rakha and various unnamed sitar players. It feels like an ethnomusicological field recording, and some of the tropes bring to mind the music and culture of Southeast Asia. This is a reminder that India resounds with musical elements from regions as diverse as Persia, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Tibet, Nepal, China, Burma, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam. With "Suite for Two Sitars and Indian Folk Ensemble," those who expect all Indian music to sound like uniformly mellifluous, stereophonically recorded ragas are in for a surprise.

While I am no ethnomusicologist, able to determine what is and what isn't "authentic" music, this cd is enjoyable and diverse music from start to finish. The ragas are compelling, but the real highlight is the Suite for Two Sitars and Indian Folk Ensemble: the sketchy audio makes it sound so positively dated (along with the melodies) that you can just feel as if this is a lost soundtrack from the 50's (which, for all we know, it very well may be!) that is kitschy yet very honest. The indisputable part is that the instruments ARE real, and the musicianship is too; for what sold at $4 in the US it is a real treat. In the 19 years I've owned this disc I keep returning to it ... a higher recommendation I cannot offer!
