It is referred to by neuroscientists as amyotrophic lateral sm-dementia (ALS-PDC), a term coined by Asao Hirano and colleagues in 1961. It is a neurodegenerative disease of uncertain etiology that exists in the United States territory of Guam.

Lytico-bodig is the local name for a complex of neurological diseases (or diseases that affect the nervous system) on Guam that resembles amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS or Lou Gerhig’s disease), a (PD) and possibly Alzheimer’s disease. Several historical resources report an epidemic of poliomyelitis that occurred in the late 1800s to early 1900s that coincides with the age of exposure to the polio virus and the age of onset of ALS-PDC for individuals later in life. In 1899, a steamer arrived from Manila and a poliomyelitis epidemic broke out shortly afterward.

Lytico-bodig was discovered in 1945 by Zimmerman and subsequently reported by physicians of the US Navy and Public Health Service. Scientists noted a 50- to 100-fold greater occurrence of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis than the rest of the world, and a notable increase in parkinsonism with dementia. By 1940, this elusive disease was the primary cause of. death in adult Chamorros. Lytico-bodig disease presents itself in two ways: lytico is a progressive paralysis that resembles ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis)

Lytico-bodig has since nearly vanished as mysteriously as it appeared. International attention came to lytico-bodig after the United States took back Guam from the Japanese more than 40 years later, when an American neurologist stationed here picked up on the disease’s emergence among the Chamorro people who are native to Guam. By the mid-1950s, it was a full-blown epidemic on an island of 60,000, afflicting people at a rate 100 times greater than similar neurodegenerative diseases did in other parts of the world.

Lytico-Bodig is a debilitating disease suffered by Guam’s Chamorro population. It manifests as a brutal combination of Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease and ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis).

Am I more lytico or bodig? Presenting symptoms exist along the continuum of lytico-bodig. Patients on the lytico spectrum present more like ALS/Lou Gehrig’s disease. These patients have muscle wasting/atrophy and accompanying weakness, paralysis of mouth and tongue, and an inability to swallow resulting in choking to death. Over time, paralysis involves the breathing muscles requiring mechanical ventilation to help the patient breath and to prevent choking on secretions. Lytico patients remain aware of their deterioration. The form of LBS is fatal in all cases.
