These are very fine performances of very fine repertoire. Cellist Steven Isserlis plays with glowing warmth, great strength, and complete commitment. Pianist Peter Evans plays with restrained power, beautiful tone, and complete sympathy. Composer Bohuslav Martinu writes with tremendous facility, deep lyricism, and complete musicality. In everyway but one, if one were going to hear Martinu's Cello Sonatas, this would be the recording to get. Unfortunately, as fine as the performances on this disc are, there are finer performances on another disc with the same repertoire

CLASSICAL Martinu: Cello Sonatas Steven Isserlis, cello; Peter Evans, piano. Hyperion CDA66296; CD and cassette. A surprising number of Martinu's countless works are just as appealingly fresh and cosmopolitan as are his three cello sonatas. Steven Isserlis plays with an ingratiating lyricism, if not as much color as the music can take, and Peter Evan partners him fluently. The sound, too, is warm and inviting. Mark Swed Barber: 'School for Scandal' Overture, Adagio for Strings, Three Essays for Orchestra and 'Medea's Dance of Vengeance' St. Louis Symphony Orchestra conducted by Leonard Slatkin. Perhaps to prove a point, Pere Ubu has made an album of mostly straightforward rock, with clean-cut melodies, foreground vocals, neat guitar hooks and hardly any of the band's old gleeful noise.
