Composers Nicola LeFanu and David Lumsdaine have careers stretching out over 40 years and have been married to each other for many years as well; while their music is very different, each derives inspiration from nature and wildlife. Soprano Sarah Leonard is featured on two vocal pieces and pianist Aleksander Szram appears on the title work. 4. kHz, 24-bit PCM – Metier Studio Masters

Mandala 3. Metier: MSV28565. Sarah Leonard (mezzo-soprano) & Aleksander Szram (piano), Gemini, Ian Mitchell. This disc stems from friendships both musical and personal: between composers David Lumsdaine and Nicola LeFanu, and chamber ensemble Gemini. BBC Music Magazine, April 2017, More.

Aleksander Szram, Gemini & Ian Mitchell – III. Fantasia (25:04). Both composers represented on this album are well respected members of the new music scene both with 40 years of experience behind them; they are also husband and wife. David Lumsdaine, though now living in England, is Australias senior composer. His music is wonderfully dramatic and wide ranging; Nicola LeFanu has been for many years a leading figure in Women in Music; her mother Elizabeth Maconchy was also a very highly respected composer. The ensemble Gemini has been associated with both composers for decades, introducing new works from both of them to the repertoire. This album is being released to celebrate Nicolas 70th birthday and (belatedly) Davids 85th.

Mandala 3: Sarah Leonard and Aleksander Szram perform choral works by Lefanu and Lumsdaine. 5 September 2018 - 4:09pm. Submitted by Music Freelance. The central work of the disc is Australian David Lumsdaine’s Mandala 3 (1978) for chamber ensemble, which proves a gloriously strange and moving piece.

Joseph Thomas Sheridan Le Fanu (/ˈlɛfən. juː/; 28 August 1814 – 7 February 1873) was an Irish writer of Gothic tales, mystery novels, and horror fiction. He was a leading ghost story writer of the nineteenth century and was central to the development of the genre in the Victorian era. M. R. James described Le Fanu as "absolutely in the first rank as a writer of ghost stories". Three of his best-known works are Uncle Silas, Carmilla, and The House by the Churchyard.

It was here that LeFanu composed her opera 'Dawnpath'. Once back in the UK, LeFanu established the composition department at King's College London, but by 1979, the same year she married David Lumsdaine, they both returned to Australia to the New South Wales Conservatory of Music as joint ce. In 1984 came another visit to Australia. Operas and Accolades Composer Nicola LeFanu talks to Donald Macleod about writing three operas in close succession Nicola LeFanu has worked with many celebrated artists during her career. One was the saxophonist John-Edward Kelly, for whom she composed a single-movement concerto.
