Gardner started Chessie in 1994, while he was a member of the Washington, . post-rock band Lorelei. In 2000 Gardner was joined by Bailes and they have since worked as a duo. While Overnight received critical acclaim and a spot on a New York Times music critic's best-of-2001 list

Signal Series ‎(CD, Album). Reformed shoegazey indie-rocker Stephen Gardner (ex-Lorelei) mucks about with D&B-style breakbeats on his first release as Chessie. There's still lots of treated-guitar squalling on this record, but it's all underpinned by rollicking beats. The sampled train sounds on this record are excellent, forming the basis for a number of breaks used throughout.

The bassist's Lorelei mates went their separate ways after one album and a pocketful of singles. Gardner wasn't so easily dissuaded from the off-beaten path. His enthusiasm and creative spirit were quickly rekindled by the renegade rhythms of English drum-and-bass. Soon after, Gardner's solo Chessie project was born.
