Many professional classical guitarists today were students of Segovia, or students of his students. Segovia's contribution to the modern-romantic repertoire not only included commissions but also his own transcriptions of classical or baroque works

Andrés Segovia recorded these works between 1944 and 1956, and they were remastered in 2010, resulting in a fairly high-quality sound. Segovia's careful phrasing and tender precision come across in the three pavanas by Milán that open this album, and the listener is taken on an auditory tour of a variety of composers and styles. In the Saltarello by an anonymous composer, one hears two different rhythms simultaneously: playing them is not a task for the fainthearted guitarist.

Years ago, I wanted to do a Segovia tribute album featuring a few of his original pieces, some of his arrangements, and music I’d played for him in master classes, Scott Tennant tells me sitting on the couch in his Los Angeles apartment. That was my strategy until I played Segovia’s Ramirez guitar. A chance encounter with the Maestro’s historic 1969 Ramirez at Guitar Salon International (GSI) in Santa Monica, California, altered Tennant’s plans.
