The most common name for the American Civil War in modern American usage is simply "The Civil War". Although used rarely during the war, the term "War Between the States" became widespread afterward in the Southern United States. During and immediately after the war, historians often used the term "War of the Rebellion" or "Great Rebellion", while the Confederate term was "War for Southern Independence"

O'Neill came from a line of the O'Neill dynasty - derbfine - that the English authorities recognized as the legitimate successors to the chieftainship of the O'Neills and to the title of Earl of Tyrone. He was the second son of Matthew O'Neill (Feardorcha Ó Néill), reputed illegitimate son of Conn, 1st Earl of Tyrone. Shane O'Neill (Seán an Díomais) a legitimate son of Conn, employed the ambivalent status of Matthew's paternity to affirm his own claim to the title The O'Neill, although illegitimacy in itself made little or no difference in terms of the Irish. O'Neill was instantly proclaimed a traitor at Dundalk. The war that followed is known as the Nine Years War.

Norris O’Neill, one of three nineteenth-century baseball figures nicknamed Tip, made a name for himself on the West Coast, where he captained the Oakland squad for several years. He played and/or managed in the minors from 1885 to 1899. In his youth, O’Neill was an acclaimed catcher, but after turning pro he tired of the demands of the position and switched to the infield, where he was far less effective, making many fielding and throwing errors. He was the sixth of seven children. His parents had immigrated to the United States in 1855, first settling in South Paterson, New Jersey. They moved to Pennsylvania in the mid-1860s just before Norris’s birth, settling in Rouseville and then Cornplanter, both in Venango County, in the oil region of northwestern Pennsylvania. Dennis supported the family as a night watchman.

The American Civil War, also known as the War Between the States, was one of the bloodiest wars in American history. It was fought between the northern and southern states of the US. The Civil War started in 1861 when the slave states of the south founded the Confederate States of America under President Jefferson Davis. The northern states, under, President Abraham Lincoln, were against slavery. The southern states depended on farming as a source of income. They grew tobacco and cotton on plantations. Between the 17th and 19th centuries millions of slaves were brought from Africa to America, where they worked on white farms.
