Every disc I have heard in the Mozart Symphony series from Sir Charles Mackerras' fruitful collaboration with the Prague Orchestra are simply amazing, and this one is no exception. The final movement of No. 35 is thrilling, and overall the tempos on this disc are perfect.
Sir Charles Mackerras returns to conduct the Scottish Chamber Orchestra in a definitive performance of five of Mozart's finest symphonies. This much anticipated recording follows on from the astounding success of Mozart: Symphonies 38-41 which resulted in Mackerras and the SCO winning the Critics' Award at the 2009 BRIT Awards and led to Mozart: Symphonies 38-41 being named 'Disc of the Year' at the 2009 BBC Music Magazine Awards. This recording includes both versions of the second movement of the 'Paris' Symphony; unusually Mackerras requested that the alternative version follows the original, rather than coming at the end of the album as an appendix.
Sir Alan Charles Maclaurin Mackerras AC CH CBE (/məˈkɛrəs/; 17 November 1925 – 14 July 2010) was an Australian conductor. He was an authority on the operas of Janáček and Mozart, and the comic operas of Gilbert and Sullivan. He was long associated with the English National Opera (and its predecessor) and Welsh National Opera and was the first Australian chief conductor of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra.

Sir Charles Mackerras and his Scottish players are working backwards through Mozart’s symphonies. This second volume follows their acclaimed (and award-winning) set of the last four symphonies with a group of works mainly from the latter part of his Salzburg period along with two he composed following his relocation to Vienna. There are some gaps here: Symphonies Nos 33 and 34, for example, and Nos 28 and 30 which both post-dated No 29.
