Robert Pete Williams (March 14, 1914 – December 31, 1980) was an American Louisiana blues musician. His music characteristically employed unconventional structures and guitar tunings, and his songs are often about the time he served in prison. His song "I've Grown So Ugly" has been covered by Captain Beefheart, on his album Safe as Milk (1967), and by The Black Keys, on Rubber Factory (2004).

Great blues artists need not be virtuoso musicians of the sort proudly paraded around by genres such as jazz and classical music. When expression and emotion are the main requirements - and real expression and emotion, not just professional stage dramatics - then playing one million notes per minute or having the most perfect sound on earth becomes much less important. But this is all a way of building up to the opinion that Robert Pete Williams is indeed a virtuoso, making him one of the most exciting country blues musicians to ever record as well as one of the most musically interesting

Robert Pete Williams (March 14, 1914 – December 31, 1980) was an American Louisiana blues musician. Robert Pete Williams. March 14, 1914 Zachary, Louisiana, United States.

Discovered in the Louisiana State Penitentiary, Robert Pete Williams became one of the great blues discoveries during the folk boom of the early ’60s. His disregard for conventional patterns, tunings, and structures kept him from a wider audience, but his music remains one of the great, intense treats of the blues. While he was a child, he worked the fields with his family; he never attended school. Williams didn’t begin playing.

Robert Pete Williams played astonishingly complex Blues guitar and sang heart-rending but beautiful songs depicting a life of jail-time, poverty and betrayal. Robert continued to record, and his 1967 album ‘Louisiana Blues’, for John Fahey ‘s Tacoma label, showed his astonishing technique. Robert rarely repeated any guitar phrase in precisely the same way and had the talent to imbue individual notes with meaning, using sustain and muting to display a virtuosity usually only seen in the finest jazz players. That album has some of Robert’s most famous songs, including ‘Grown So Ugly’ but, despite its fantastic quality, the archaic style meant it did not make Robert much money.
