The Broadway cast Hair album, released on RCA Records, topped the US billboard charts for a year. Ragni had been working on a musical called Dude (The Highway Life) ever since Hair had opened. He had bulging notebooks filled with scribbles of dialogue and lyrics written in between meals at Max's Kansas City. Combined it was a 2,000-page script. He discussed doing the score with MacDermot after the . opening, but MacDermot was doing Two Gentlemen of Verona at the time. In the 1970s Ragni, Rado, MacDermot, and Margoshes collaborated on a new musical called Sun, also called YMCA, which ultimately was not produced. It was a "60-song, three-hour musical about 'evolution, with an Odyssey plot'"; "an environmental musical about politics, pollution and the rain forests being cut down among other topics".

Dude (The Highway Life) was the Broadway musical follow-up to Hair for composer Galt MacDermot, lyricist-librettist Jerome Ragni and director Tom O'Horgan. It began life as a studio cast album, Salome Bey Sings Songs from Dude, recorded in March 1972, and released on Kilmarnock Records. The show opened on October 9, 1972, and was as unexpected a failure as Hair had been a success, running only two weeks. Nevertheless, a cast album was recorded and also released on Kilmarnock.

Dude (The Highway Life) is a rock musical with a book and lyrics by Gerome Ragni and music by Galt MacDermot. It is an allegory about good and evil, the conflict between mankind's creative and destructive urges, the power of love, and the joy to be found in simple pleasures. Dude is an Everyman who loses his innocence and fights to regain it. As soon as the musical Hair opened, Ragni began to work on Dude. MacDermot was busy with Two Gentlemen of Verona but finally began to compose the music.
