Having recently discovered the world of Star Trek Books, I was looking forward to reading Caretaker to see how it compared to the television episode. I have to say that the book followed the script pretty well, but it didn't diminish the suspense of the story even though I know how it was eventually going to end. Caretaker tells the story of the USS Voyager, its captain Kathryn Janeway and her crew, going on its first mission to capture a rebel Maquis ship.

Surprisingly enough, out of all of the Star Trek novels written by the LA Graf (Let's All Get Rich and Famous) writing team of Julia Ecklar and Karen Rose Cercone, this was the first one of theirs that I'd read. I found their writing style for this novelization of Voyager's lead off episode to be very well written and fast paced, easily accomplishing what novelizations are for.

Caretaker is based upon the characters on the television show Star Trek: Voyager and is the pilot episode of the series. This story takes place during the first season of the show, so Kes is still on board and Seven of Nine has not yet joined the crew. I found the characters to be amazing true to the television series of today, even after 5 years. The writing style was easy to read and the story moves along

Having seen the televised episode I could clearly 'see' where the characters were in the story and what they were doing. Robert Picardo played the other characters well as well as the computer voice. I could follow the story with ease with Robert Picardo's narration. What about Robert Picardo’s performance did you like? It was clear,succinct expressive and easy to follow.
