Taking these points one by one, we may observe first that MacPartland here plays very much as he always did: in a clear, simple, economical style, with great timing and fine self-possession. In spite of the stories, his lip seems adequate. McHargue is a surprise; he plays lovely Dixieland clarinet (reminiscent of Omer Simeon in the last chorus of Panama), with good tone, line, ideas and phrasing, as well as a special gift for striking solo entrances. Jack Gardner proves to be a more than satisfactory pianist, and his solos on Panama and Eccentric are excellent.

The Original Dixieland Jass Band (ODJB) was a Dixieland jazz band that made the first jazz recordings in early 1917. Their "Livery Stable Blues" became the first jazz record ever issued. The group composed and recorded many jazz standards, the most famous being "Tiger Rag". In late 1917 the spelling of the band's name was changed to Original Dixieland Jazz Band.
