This album brought Tavares together with songwriters and producers Dennis Lambert and Brian Potter for what would prove to be a productive musical relationship on this and the group's following album, In the City. Hard Core Poetry reached on the R&B chart and was critically praised for its strong and diverse selection of songs and sophisticated but soulful production; the album remains one of the group's most highly regarded.
Hard Core Poetry (1974). The album peaked at No. 20 on the R&B albums chart. It also reached No. 160 on the Billboard 200. The album features the title track, which peaked at No. 5 on the Hot Soul Singles chart and No. 35 on the Billboard Hot 100, and "That's the Sound That Lonely Makes", which reached No. 10 on the Hot Soul Singles chart and No. 70 on the Billboard Hot 100.
