Machina II/The Friends & Enemies of Modern Music is the sixth studio album by the American alternative rock band The Smashing Pumpkins. It was released for free on the Internet on September 5, 2000. Plans for a standard physical release, bundled with the first part Machina/The Machines of God, were revealed to happen sometime in 2013, but was postponed due to legal setbacks.

Having decided that the earlier Friends and Enemies effort at getting rare songs out to the Pumpkins' fan base surreptitiously was successful, Billy Corgan organized a more formal effort with Machina II, borrowing the original tape title while revamping the contents. Twenty-five copies were made on three 10" and two 12" vinyl discs.

The Q101 radio station received one of the 25 vinyl copies of Machina II distributed by the band. It was subsequently transferred to two CDs by the station (one CD containing the EP1, EP2 and EP3 tracks and one containing the LP tracks). The transfer was done by a high profile radio station (presumably with high-end equipment and professional oversight) and spectral analysis shows the transfer to be of good quality. Copies were given away as prizes from the station. Limited to 2,000 and hand numbered and released under the Q101 name  . Not On Label (The Smashing Pumpkins).

I'd pretty much written the Smashing Pumpkins off after their severely disappointing fifth (and assumed to be final) album. It would be extremely easy to dismiss this album as Billy simply taking out the accumulated garbage of the past couple years. It would be easy, that is, if it didn't almost redeem the Pumpkins. You certainly can't accuse them of trying to make a buck, as they've probably lost at least a couple hundred printing up the source copies of this release.

It also shows that The Smashing Pumpkins hadn't changed much from their last album (although a little less then a year wouldn't have given them much time to stop writing the same way). Catchy riff, catchy words, my only complaint is it is too short at . The beginning of this song will catch any listeners attention right away/ James is squealing out his opening riff when Billy comes in saying "you gotta understand". Then after some singing and drums everyone kicks back in.
