The band sought a more "studio-oriented" approach than their previous albums and experimented new sounds with keyboards. The word "Repetition" was chosen as the album's title because, according to singer and guitarist Justin Trosper, "I like.
Debut album This Is Our Message (1997) consisted of home recordings from 1994 to 1996 (the CD version contained ten bonus tracks not included on the vinyl version due to time constraints). William Goldsmith of Foo Fighters and Sunny Day Real Estate played drums for a period in 1996 before they started playing with drummer Joe Plummer of Bare Minimum/ The Black Heart Procession and later of Modest Mouse and The Shins and a rotating cast of members.
