Conductor: Karl Böhm. Composer: Ludwig van Beethoven, Franz Schubert. Audio CD (May 14, 1996). Of course, the Wiener Philharmoniker, at its height at the time of this recording, is perfect here. The strings and the woodwinds are truly impeccable here, you simply can't find a more pure and sensible playing anywhere else. So, other than a slightly flawed 1st movement, this 6th indeed comes close to being perfect. Beethoven: Symphonies 5 & 6, Pastorale Audio CD. Ludwig van Beethoven. Pages with related products. Dresdner Philharmonie, Herbert Kegel, Beethoven: Symphonie Nr. 6 (Pastorale). CD Info: Ludwig van Beethoven - Symphonie Nr. 6 op. 68 (Pastorale). Dresdner Philharmonie, Herbert Kegel. Kegel studied at the Dresden Conservatory, where Karl Böhm was one of his teachers, from 1935 to 1940, beginning his career, after serving as a conscript during the war in 1946, as kapellmeister of the Volkstheater Rostock. From 1949 to 1978 he was associated with the Leipzig Radio Orchestra & Choir, becoming choirmaster, music director, and principal conductor of the Great Radio Orchestra and Radio Choir in 1953.

Ludwig Van Beethoven (1770-1827): Symphonie N. F-dur o. 8 Pastorale: 1 1. Erwachen heiterer Empfindungen bei der Ankunft auf dem Lande: Allegro ma non troppo 12:21. 2 2. Szene am Bach: (Andante molto mosso) 14:00. Karl Böhm's Beethoven is a compound of earth and fire. His VPO recording of Beethoven's Sixth of 1971 dominated the LP catalogue for over a decade, and has done pretty well on CD on its various appearances. It still sounds well and the performance (with the first-movement exposition repeat included) has an unfolding naturalness and a balance between form and lyrical impulse that's totally satisfying. Wiener Philharmoniker Karl Böhm, conductor.

Karl Böhm, who was born in Graz in 1894 and died in Salzburg in 1981, occupies a special place in the history of the Vienna Philharmonic. In 1967 this doctor of jurisprudence became the first person to whom the orchestra awarded the title honorary conductor – a distinction that has since then been accorded only once more in the orchestra’s history, namely, to Herbert von Karajan in 1980. Just how warmly Böhm felt toward the orchestra is evident in the words that he spoke at his last appearance with the Philharmonic. Conductor: Karl Böhm. Symphony Nr. 6 F-Dur op. 68 „Pastorale. 1. Erwachen heiterer Empfindungen bei Ankunft auf dem Lande, Allegro ma non troppo. 2. Szene am Bach, Andate molto mosso.
