American Recordings is the 81st album by the country singer Johnny Cash. It was released on April 26, 1994 by American Recordings, after it had changed its name from Def American. The album marked the beginning of a career resurgence for Cash, who was widely recognized as an icon of American music but whose record sales had suffered during the late 1970s and 1980s.

Well, Johnny Cash, but not Johnny Cash without Rick Rubin. The album is good, but more importantly, it’s a shrewd marketing idea. The triumphant rebirth of the man in black, a tortured soul who sings about killing and being forgiven for killing. It’s showbizzy, of course. No man can be as authentic as Johnny Cash without a pretty firm grasp of how to work his audience. My grandpa never bought a Johnny Cash album after American Recordings. He didn’t like this album because it was the first time he ever heard Johnny Cash sound weak, and he didn’t want to hear that. It was a Johnny Cash my grandpa didn’t want to know existed, a Johnny Cash who could die soon. It sounded to him like a man revealing himself too much, being too vulnerable. That generational divide is important.
American Recordings became a critical sensation and a commercial success, though it was overrated in some quarters simply because it reminded audiences that one of America's greatest musical talents was still capable of making compelling music, something he had never stopped doing even if no one bothered to listen

Helmed by Rick Rubin, Johnny Cash’s American Recordings saw the country legend make a stunning return late his career, re-establishing his rebel cred. Published on. November 22, 2018. There are no funny songs on them (and he’d done plenty of those in the past) and, save for a few bursts of rockabilly on Unchained (the liveliest album of the lot, with Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers as back-up band), very few rockers. The darkness would of course become more palpable as the series went on, with the songs tied to tragic events in Cash’s own later life. Rubin famously opened Cash’s ears to songs from far outside his comfort zone, and it’s those songs, from artists such as Depeche Mode, Soundgarden, Nick Cave and, most famously, Nine Inch Nails, that have come to be the most.
Ships from and sold by CDWarehouseOnline. After hearing so many people gush about the Johnny Cash /Rick Rubin American series for several years, I finally got around to giving them a listen. I started with the first one "American Recordings". The first listen was a wow moment. A few weeks later I bought the next three "Unchained", "American III: Solitary Man" and American IV: The Man Comes Around".
Among country’s old guard, Johnny Cash remains incontrovertibly cool. Aptly, Rick Rubin provides American Recordings a production that’s tougher than leather: stark guitar and Cash’s wise-as-Isaiah vocal delivery
