Scheherazade (Rimsky-Korsakov). This orchestral work combines two features typical of Russian music and of Rimsky-Korsakov in particular: dazzling, colorful orchestration and an interest in the East, which figured greatly in the history of Imperial Russia, as well as orientalism in general. The name "Scheherazade" refers to the main character Shahrazad of the One Thousand and One Nights. In 1959, bandleader Skip Martin adapted from Scheherazade the jazz album Scheherajazz (Sommerset-Records), in which the lead actress, Yvonne De Carlo, was also the principal dancer. The plot of this film is a heavily fictionalized story, based on the composer's early career in the navy. Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Antal Doráti (Mercury Living Presence, 1959).

I can safely report that the sound is absolutely incredible. Antal Doráti was born for this Russian repertoire. The sense of excitement and dashing panache that he brings is quite dazzling. the sound is astonishingly vivid with violins and percussion sounding actually in your listening room, a tribute to those talented Mercury engineers. Decca must be thanked for resurrecting these gems. Antal Doráti leads the London Symphony Orchestra and the London Symphony Chorus on this diverse programme, recorded in England in 1956 and 1959.

Rimsky-Korsakov: Scheherazade. Dorati gives Janis warmly detailed and wonderfully played support, from both the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra (now the Minnesota Orchestra) in the 2nd concerto and the London Symphony Orchestra in the 3rd concerto. Remarkably, there is no discernible difference in either the orchestras' abilities (a tribute to Dorati) or the ambient sound (a tribute to the skilled Mercury team, led by Bob Fine and Wilma Cozart Fine). The album is nicely rounded out with two Rachmaninoff preludes, including the famous Prelude in C-sharp Minor. The booklet, save for technical updates describing the transfer-to-SACD process and an update on Janis's activities to the present, faithfully duplicates the original text and artwork.
