Basic Blues Magoos is the third album by the American rock band the Blues Magoos. It was released on Mercury Records in May 1968 (see 1968 in music). The album saw the group transitioning from psychedelia back to their blues rock roots. Though the album has gained more favor over the years, it was received as a disappointment upon its original distribution and failed to chart. Studio album by Blues Magoos. The band emerged as proven songwriters by the time they commenced recording, so the group decided self-producing all but four tracks on Basic Blues Magoos was the most ideal move to achieve independence from Wyld and Polhemus. The album represented a notably shift in the Blues Magoos musical direction, as they began returning to their blues rock roots with a blend.

Formed in the Bronx, New York, USA, in 1964 and initially known as The Trenchcoats, the founding line-up consisted of Emil "Peppy" Thielhelm, vocals, guitar, Dennis LaPore, lead guitar, Ralph Scala, organ and vocals, Ronnie Gilbert, bass and John Finnegan, drums. The group quickly became an important part of the emergent Greenwich Village Rock scene and in 1966 secured a residency at the fabled Night Owl club. Drummer Geoff Daking replaced LaPore in time to record their debut album, "Psychedelic Lollipop", which was released in November 1966. The band was now using a more traditional spelling of their name, Blues Magoos. In February of 1967, Mercury released a single called "We Ain't Got Nothin' Yet", written by band members, Gilbert, Scala and Esposito.
