However, these "young lions" had kept busy playing the Chicago jazz scene; in fact, they were regularly hired by late trumpeter Red Rodney for Midwestern gigs in the '80s and early '90s. The better-known players on The Brighter Side are pianist Garry Dial and saxman Chris Potter, both of whom were also Rodney sidemen and had been part of his East Coast team. One of the more interesting and impressive young lions to emerge in the '90s, Potter is in good-to-excellent form on this album.
Joel Spencer (born April 20, 1946) is an American mathematician. He is a combinatorialist who has worked on probabilistic methods in combinatorics and on Ramsey theory. He received his doctorate from Harvard University in 1970, under the supervision of Andrew Gleason. He is currently (as of 2018) a professor at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences of New York University.
The Modern Jazz Quartet (MJQ) was a jazz combo established in 1952 that played music influenced by classical, cool jazz, blues and bebop. For most of its history the Quartet consisted of John Lewis (piano), Milt Jackson (vibraphone), Percy Heath (double bass), and Connie Kay (drums). The group grew out of the rhythm section of Dizzy Gillespie's big band from 1946 to 1948, which consisted of Lewis and Jackson along with bassist Ray Brown and drummer Kenny Clarke.
His music has been performed by the Joel Spencer Quartet, Dick Oatts with the Northwestern Jazz Ensemble and by Chuck Owen & the Jazz Surge at the 2008 International Jazz Composers Symposium. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Music from Northwestern University, where he studied jazz piano with Joan Hickey, jazz arranging with Tom Garling and classical orchestration with Aaron Travers. Josh has written arrangements for Hal Leonard (All About Trumpet) and he composes music for Harpo Sounds (The Oprah Winfrey Show). The Chicago quartet led by Josh Moshier (on outstanding keys throughout the album) and Mike Lebrun (on sax) takes neither of the standard tacks. Instead, Lebrun and Moshier craft straightforward but clever pieces of melody, then use the band as a whole to ornament heavily around the themes.

Sophisticated Lady jazz quartet pays homage to the Great Tradition of American jazz but most of their repertoire is written by members of the quartet. Unlike the majority of contemporary jazz recordings, which are carefully and surgically perfected in postproduction, this album remains raw and fresh. Yarlung recorded this album directly to two tracks of RMGI 468 analog tape running at 15 ips, with no mixer
