Collectors' Items is a 1956 studio album by Miles Davis. There are two sessions collected on the album with largely different musicians. The first 1953 session is "Compulsion", "The Serpent's Tooth" (two takes) and "'Round About Midnight". The second 1956 session is "In Your Own Sweet Way", "Vierd Blues" and "No Line"

Miles Davis welcomes Charlie Parker and Sonny Rollins on this 1953 session that includes No Line and In Your Own Sweet Way. I was the engineer on the recording session and I also made the masters for the original LP issue of this album. Since the advent of the CD, other people have been making the masters. Mastering is the final step in the process of creating the sound of the finished product. What added to the success of Collectors’ Items is to how recording engineer Rudy Van Gelder help make the album a success during his stay his with the Prestige label when he added in an interview: Today, I feel strongly that I was their messenger.

This set lives up to its title by including such interesting sessions as the 1953 date on which Miles Davis welcomed the two tenors of Sonny Rollins and Charlie Parker; other meetings with Rollins in 1951 and 1956; and a moody 1955 date with bassist Charles Mingus, trombone, vibes, and drums (a young Elvin Jones). Highlights include "No Line," "Vierd Blues," "In Your Own Sweet Way," "Nature Boy," and "There's No Yo. It's classic if often overlooked music from a variety of immortal jazzmen.

Collectors’ Items opens the studio doors to listeners, allowing them to take part in a moment-Charlie Parker trying out a new King tenor sax; Miles Davis informally improvising; the band recording Round About Midnight at six PM, due to the studio closing down for the night. Ira Gitler’s liner notes recall details like this-adding dimension and a context to the album’s tracks. In 1949 Davis released the album Birth of the Cool (Captiol Records). Change of artistic direction became central to Davis’ long and increasingly influential career. After dabbling in hard bop as a leader on four Prestige recordings featuring John Coltrane, he signed with Columbia records and made albums that featured Gil Evans’ arrangements for 19-piece orchestra.
