Formed in Los Angeles in 2012, Perfect Beings made waves across the progressive rock community with their first two eponymous discs-2014’s I and 2015’s II. Filled with delightfully catchy yet multifaceted vocal arrangements and a fine mixture of modern sleekness and retro sophistication (courtesy of influences like Yes, Pink Floyd, Soft Machine, and Peter Gabriel), the pair felt very much like two halves of a highly distinctive statement (hence the similar titles and covers).

Supreme Beings of Leisure (SBL) are an electronic/trip hop band from Los Angeles, California. Current members of SBL are singer/songwriter Geri Soriano-Lightwood and t/programmer Ramin Sakurai. SBL was formed from the remains of the band Oversoul 7 in 1998 when they signed to Palm Pictures

I’ll be the first to admit that I’m no expert when it comes to the vast world of jazz, but this album blew me away. What a cool concept to have seen through (four locations, various musicians) to fruition. I love the spontaneous composition that Makaya practices.

In the final moments of Universal Beings-at the end of a radiant hour and a half of polymorphic pulse and atmospheric shimmer-Makaya McCraven breaks a blissful silence with a practical question. You guys got all that? he asks, presumably addressing the mobile recording crew set up in a garage behind a house in Los Angeles. McCraven, a drummer and producer with an alchemist’s touch, and Jeff Parker, a guitarist possessed of similar magic, have just glided through the impromptu dreamscape that will provide this album with a title track.
