Discovery or its alternative title Discovery & The Lake (as printed on the album rear and spine) is the ninth album by Mike Oldfield, released in 1984. It was recorded at Oldfield's then-home in Villars-sur-Ollon in the Swiss Alps where he was living for tax reasons. Oldfield also wrote The Killing Fields, the soundtrack to the 1984 film of the same name there. Selections from the two albums were later released as the 1984 Suite.

With 1984's Discovery, Mike Oldfield seems to be back on track, utilizing the vocal power of Maggie Reilly and the drum playing of Simon Phillips to create some rather appealing selections. The Lake" is a simply gorgeous instrumental inspired by Switzerland's Lake Geneva, the location in which the album was recorded, while "To France" is a powerful pop/rock tune based on the life of Mary, Queen of Scots.

Discovery is one of Mike Oldfield's stronger 80's releases because, unlike most of his albums, the vocal tracks here are outstanding. Maggie Reiley performs vocals here on several tracks, and she is great as usual. In something of a contrast, the male vocal pieces here are excellent as well. In fact, I would go so far as to say that there are no bad songs on this album. This is perhaps the only Mike Oldfield album where the vocal pieces are stronger than the instrumental ones. 10 people found this helpful.

Mike set up a studio in a house on a mountainside above Lake Geneva, in the Swiss Alps, in which he wrote and recorded Discovery. During his time in Switzerland, Barry Palmer lost his voice, which of course meant he had trouble singing. The opening theme from 'To France' returns in 'Talk about your Life', while a small part of the melody of 'Tricks of the Light' continues into 'Discovery'. These help to give a feel of connectedness to the album, which is helped along by the way 'To France' blends in to 'Poison Arrows' and the general way that the album is compiled.
