There is something both odd and immensely cheering about the arc of Jane Weaver’s career. For whatever reason, you don’t get many artists hitting their stride after 22 years and eight albums, particularly with something inspired in equal part by Yoko Ono and Polish film director Andrzej Żuławski. But that’s precisely what happened with Weaver’s 2014 release The Silver Globe. But The Silver Globe still felt like a quantum leap forward, an album that focused her ideas and distilled the contents of her very groovy and carefully curated record collection into 45 minutes of gleaming modern psychedelia, her cut-glass vocals floating over musical backdrops that melded the mesmerising repetitions of krautrock with early 80s synth pop, eerie folk and the kind. of obscure soundtracks, library music and experimental electronics that inspired Broadcast and the artists on the acclaimed cult label Ghost Box.

What makes Jane Weaver and Modern Kosmology such a joy is that it comes as sharp and welcome relief to so many of the serious and po-faced purveyors of cynically cosmic vibes. This is music that simultaneously celebrates and explores, that takes pop as its foundation and then builds a multi-layered space on it that welcomes one and all. But it also establishes Jane Weaver as a formidable talent whose ongoing musical journey promises to make some interesting stops and deviations from established routes. And it’s difficult to shake the feeling that there are more surprises to come

On her 2014 album, The Silver Globe, Jane Weaver took a step away from the gentle psych-folk she had been making into something more German and droning. Playing most of the instruments herself, with help from the occasional drummer or guitarist, she creates a world of sound that envelops the listener in much the.
