Thaw however pulled a Dead as Dreams and stretched their musical ideas out way too much to the point of stagnation. Whatever good moments on Thaw are buried within a layer of atmospherically stale music that doesn't achieve anything. However they're the only good things about this album as everything else is just completely abysmal. The main problem with Thaw is how utterly empty everything feels. The music feels thin, shallow and detached, it's not entertaining to listen to because the whole thing is so worn out that it just doesn't stand out to me.

Thaw by Arkheron Thodol, released 20 April 2017 1. I. Catalyst/Thresholds of Frost 2. II. The Reins of a Storm 3. III. Gnosis 4. IV. Spiritum Viridis 5. V. Within the Lucid Deep 6. VI. Sapling 7. VII. To Breathe; The Offering. Brian3737 This is terrific. I would put it up there with Panopticon’s best work.

Simon Sludge Thaw deliver modern Black Metal with a few dissonant notches and spacey, almost Post Rock-ish moments, which I'm usually really not a fan of in Black Metal. Thaw manage to pull it off without sounding too much like Hipster Black Metal, though. Especially, since most of them sound rather dark and eerie.

Album (Studio full-length). Black Metal, Ambient, Noise.

Thaw’s guitar work on this album is flawlessly worked out, and that is the strongest weapon that the band has. Their twisted melodies give the listener an eerie feeling – a prime example being about one minute in to Afterkingdom. What I also found quite interesting was the certain influence of Ved Buens Ende in their music. Thaw is one of the most interesting black metal bands that you will probably find out there. The effort that they put into their song-writing and performance on Earth Ground is insane, while their inclusion of ambient parts, noise influences and sonic experimentation lifts them even further in my esteem.

All the traditional harsh, machine-based noise is still present, but in slightly more conventional patterns than before.
