John Playford (1623–1686/7) was a London bookseller, publisher, minor composer, and member of the Stationers' Company, who published books on music theory, instruction books for several instruments, and psalters with tunes for singing in churches. He is perhaps best known today for his publication of The English Dancing Master in 1651. Playford was born in Norwich, the younger son of John Playford

John Playford, a bookseller and publisher, collected these formal English country dances and published them along with his own arrangements of a different kind of dancing that was popular with the lower and poorer classes. This was English country folk dancing. These dances and tunes were easier to learn and didn't take long to learn. These dances came from English Tradition. Playford wrote these down in music notation and arranged them for instruments so they would appeal to the upper and middle classes. This became the "English dancing Master" 1651.

Country dancing gained popularity throughout England, as well as Scotland, Ireland, Europe, and the American colonies. Publishers and choreographers competed with annual collections of new dances to feed the growing appetite, and dancing masters built careers teaching style and repertoire. Interest in the English country dance peaked in the late 18th century (as described, for example, in Jane Austen's novels and letters), and then quickly faded as social dancing in society was revolutionized by the introduction of the waltz, polka, and other couple dances in the early 19th century.

The list below includes all pages in the category "Country dances". This includes individual works designated by their composers as a 'Country dance' (or 'Contredanse') in a title or subtitle.
