The Stranglers - Greatest Hits 1977-1990 album flac

Despite its rather cheeky title, Greatest Hits 1977-1990 is a good place to sample the entire Stranglers output. From the squalor of the late-'70s material, to the smoothed-out gloom pop of songs like "Skin Deep" and other mid- to late-'80s neo-goth rock, this is a solid anthology that values substance over style and exhaustive track selection.

The song stuck with me, but I never did pursue getting a Stranglers album. Finally, I picked up their greatest hits album. I went to SKIN DEEP first and once again enjoyed this song. However, I was impressed with the rest of the songs on this album. The first 4 songs have a definite 70's punk sound to them, almost like early XTC. The rest of the album transitions into a more modern rock sound that never looses its luster.

The Stranglers' final album with Cornwell, 10, was released in 1990. This was recorded with the intention of building on their "cult" status in America. Following the success of their cover of The Kinks' "All Day and All of the Night", a UK No. 7 hit in 1988, The Stranglers released another '60s cover, "96 Tears" as their first single from 10; it reached No. 17 in the UK. Despite this success, the follow-up single "Sweet Smell of Success" only reached N. 5. The set list was the same as the 1977 concert, with the addition of a couple of more recent songs as a final encore Fifth decade (2010–present).
