Composer: Carl Maria von Weber. Synopsis: Der Freischütz Synopsis. Libretto: Der Freischütz Libretto. He does a great job at portraying that sort of operatic caveman that first appears in this opera, the kind we meet again in Fafner and Fasolt in Wagner's Ring for example. But the real star of the recording is Erich Kleiber, the precision and transparency.

Carl Maria von Weber, in full Carl Maria Friedrich Ernst, Freiherr (baron) von Weber, (born Nov. 18, 1786, Eutin, Holstein -died June 5, 1826, London, En., German composer and opera director during the transition from Classical to Romantic music, noted especially for his operas Der Freischütz (1821; The Freeshooter, or, more colloquially, The Magic Marksman), Euryanthe (1823), and Oberon (1826). Der Freischütz, the most immediately and widely popular German opera that had been written to date, established German Romantic opera. Weber was born into a musical and theatrical family. He was rescued by an appointment as director of music to Duke Eugen of Württemberg, for whose private orchestra he wrote two symphonies.
Carl Maria von Weber: Der Freischütz. Carl Maria von Weber's Der Freischütz (1821) inaugurated the genre, which increasingly became associated with a distinctively German national style, as exemplified by composers such as Heinrich Marschner (. Der Vampyr and Hans Heiling), Albert Lortzing (. Undine) and Louis Spohr. Themes explored included nature, the supernatural, the Middle Ages and popular culture, specifically folklore. The Black Rider is an album by Tom Waits, released in 1993 on Island Records, featuring studio versions of songs Waits wrote for the play The Black Rider, directed by Robert Wilson and co-written by William S. Burroughs. The play is based on the German folktale Der Freischütz, which had previously been made into an opera by Carl Maria von Weber.
