Enya's first projects as a solo artist included soundtrack work for The Frog Prince (1984) and the 1987 BBC documentary series The Celts, which was released as her debut album, Enya (1987). She signed with Warner Music UK, which granted her artistic freedom and minimal interference from the label. The commercial and critical success of Watermark (1988) propelled her to worldwide fame, helped by the international top-10 hit single "Orinoco Flow". The album went to number 2 in Japan, and became Enya's second to sell one million copies in the country. November 2002 saw the release of Only Time – The Collection, a box set of 51 tracks recorded through her career which received a limited release of 200,000 copies.

Watermark is the second studio album by the Irish singer, songwriter and musician Enya, released on 19 September 1988 by Warner Music internationally and on 10 January 1989 by Geffen Records in the United States. After the release of her previous album Enya (1987), she secured a recording contract with Warner Music after a chance meeting with chairman Rob Dickins, who had become a fan of her music. Her contract allowed her considerable artistic and creative freedom, with minimal interference from the label and no deadlines to have albums finished. In its initial run the album spent 54 weeks on the chart, returning each year from 1989 to 1995 for a total 99 weeks. In the United States, it debuted the Billboard 200 chart at number 100, the week of 4 February 1989. The album had a steady climb, and reached its peak at 25 on the week ending.

Following her first album, Enya (1987), produced for the BBC documentary The Celts, Enya signed with WEA, giving her complete artistic freedom on a follow up with no interference from the label. Watermark displays Enya's distinct sound of layered vocals, keyboard sounds, and elements of Celtic music. The album is seen by some as a seminal example of new-age music, though Enya does not consider her music to be of the genre

Ive always loved enya her voice is so haunting and that style of music is so celtic, i bought this cd, as in 1993 there was only the tape version, to play in the car, and unfortanely 15 years later cassettes do not sound the same and easily get damaged. Enya is a very talented artist and her music is excellent although you might not understand some of what she is singing the music say,s it all, such a great cd 15 years on, i bought this cd because it reminds me of a holiday in dorset in 1993 when i was carrying my first child, so many memories, ONCE AGAIN EXCELLENT.

Though this may be Enya's most ethereal album, her first in popular release, it is the one cited the least of her output. Which is curious, since it is the one that was engineered from the beginning as a soundtrack, something most of her later music turns into, anyway. The Celts", the title track, in fact, may be the only well-known tune on the album! However, if you ever wanted to score a science fiction or fantasy movie, this would the one album of hers to mine from  .
