The Maccabees supposedly settled on their name after picking it randomly from the Bible, which is just as well, since the band sounds like they settled on their sound as arbitrarily, albeit with an eye toward the charts. Indeed, the record is frontloaded with the band's breakthrough UK singles, but those singles do the band no favors. The album doesn't do a lot of lingering itself, but even at a brisk 35 minutes, Colour It In struggles to overcome the suspicion you've heard it all before. Not just from another band, mind, but from just five minutes ago, on the same CD, from the same band. No doubt, there's a certain effortless quality to the rush of hooks and herky-jerk rhythms, but that's not to say the Maccabees shouldn't have put a little more effort into them.

Bands have been enhanced by all kinds of chemicals over the years on their quest for musical nirvana, but it’s probably safe to say that ‘Colour It In’ is the first album to be conceived under the eye-watering influence of high-grade municipal pool disinfectant  . Long may The Maccabees keep on swimming against the wave machine’s tide.

So, with The Maccabees cashing in on the success of their 'Toothpaste Kisses' single by re-releasing their debut LP, should we be cynical old grouches and dismiss the album out of hand? Or is it worth a second whirl? 'Toothpaste Kisses' is the tune which inspired this re-hashed record, so it's appropriate that we discuss it first. However, there is much more to The Macs than a single juicy pop hit: Colour It In is packed full of treats like a bumper picnic basket. It's an album that's best devoured in the privacy of one's bedroom with a splash of alcohol and stash of tissues to weep into. Orlando Weeks' fragile and tremoring vocals underpin everything the band does, raising them above the thousands of other gangly indie nerds who've been doing the rounds since The Libertines.

album are all rather similar a show of strength, of realizing where your assets lie instead of signaling a lack of versatility. Weeks brings life and individuality to each of the songs, though, to be fair, his bandmates' bright arpeggios, sharp like broken glass, sixteenth-note, tom-filled drum lines and heavy bass don't make his job very hard. The Maccabees are in touch with the times they're living in, with the music and the energy around them, picking up on the trends they hear (. the Futureheads, Dogs Die in Hot Cars) but only in a way that compliments their influences, making Colour It In an enjoyable, even if ephemeral, record. 1 X-Ray The Maccabees 3:16.
